A few words about the project

"The crown jewel of the classical dance repertoire" (Oxford Dictionary of Ballet), "The Sleeping Beauty", the "ballet of ballets", premiered in St. Petersburg on 14 January 1890. It is considered the greatest work of choreographer Marius Petipa, with the most beautiful ballet music ever written by Tchaikovsky. It was the first ballet danced by Rudolf Nureyev in the West (1961), the first role of George Balanchine (at the famous Mariinsky Theatre), the work with which the Royal Ballet first appeared in the United States, and the work with which the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden resumed its performances (with Margot Fonteyn in the role of Dawn) in 1946, after World War II.

Petipa's historical choreography is based on Charles Perault's classic fairy tale "The Sleeping Beauty" (1697). In a distant kingdom, the King and Queen celebrate the birth of their daughter, Princess Dawn. Beautiful fairies and elves have been invited to the celebration, who arrive bringing gifts and wishes for the newborn girl. The Wicked Witch, angry at not being invited to the celebration, swears revenge. When the Princess turns sixteen, the Witch casts her spell and the girl falls into a deep sleep. After a hundred years, the virtuous Prince gives her the long-awaited kiss and she awakens. The royal court celebrates their love and their wedding takes place.
