“The Nutcracker”: 05.12.2015 to 12.12.2015
With one of the most famous ballets of all time, the Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, the Ballet of the Greek National Opera reunites with the Thessaloniki audience, in collaboration with the Thessaloniki State Orchestra. The “Nutcracker” by Renato Tzanella It was first presented at the Vienna State Opera in 2000, while since 2012 it has been presented with great success every year at the Greek National Opera.
Thoughts of R. Tzanellas on Nutcracker (from the show's program): "Love is very important in the show. It is everywhere. Like love. In my version, I don't hide the Prince, he is present from the beginning. But love comes gradually, when Clara-Maria realizes how much the new man who follows her to the end of the world can do for her. I wanted my story to be real and contain real emotions.
The show is aimed at the whole family. My version is a love story, while the original script concerns the dream of a little girl who could not even dream of love, since she had not known it. I tried to see the subject as an educator and as a father. My show has a lot of humor and while there is a lot of tension, there is no violence. I tried to avoid this violent environment that is usually proposed to children today…”.
The Nutcracker at a glance
The Russian Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was one of the most popular composers of the 19th century. He composed symphonies, concertos, operas, chamber music and music for ballets with equal success. Swan Lake (1877), Sleeping Beauty (1890), The Nutcracker(1892), which to this day remain the most popular in the dance repertoire.
The same elements that govern Tchaikovsky's creative work as a whole have also led several choreographers to exploit the composer's music in creating new works. Thus, it is no coincidence that the composer's name has been associated with the art of dance, perhaps more than that of any other of his colleagues.
The work, in its original two-act form with choreography by Lev Ivanov and libretto by Marius Petipa, for which Tchaikovsky composed the music, was first performed at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg on 18 December 1892. It was part of an evening that also included the one-act opera Iolanthi by Tchaikovsky. The original plot is based on the short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffman. Several choreographies followed, including those by George Balanchine (1954), Yuri Grigorovich (1966), John Cranko the same year, Rudolf Nureyev (1967) and John Neumayer (1971).
