The Bolshoi Theater this year celebrates 240 years since its founding, and Google is celebrating the birthday of the historic Moscow, Russia theater with a special Doodle.

The Bolshoi Theatre was founded in 1776 by Prince Pyotr Vasilyevich Urusov and Michael Maddox. In the early years, performances were held in private venues. The current Theatre was built between 1821 and 1824. The building was designed by architect Andrei Mikhailov and opened on 18 January 1825. Initially, only Russian works were presented, while foreign works were included in the repertoire from 1840. In the 19th century, the Theatre underwent renovations and reconstruction between 1921 and 1923. During World War II, the Theatre was damaged by a bomb, which was soon repaired. A new venue called the New Stage opened on 29 November 2002 and was built to the left of the Theatre's historic stage. Then from July 2005 to October 2011 the Theatre was closed for restoration and renovation. After a long period of reconstruction during which performances were staged on the New Stage and the Stage of the Grand Kremlin Palace, finally on October 28, 2011 the Bolshoi Theatre reopened with a grand concert featuring internationally renowned artists. Immediately afterwards the opera “Ruslan and Lyudmila” and the ballet “The Sleeping Beauty” were presented.

It is one of the largest and most brilliant troupes in the world with distinguished artists (opera singers, dancers, musicians) who present performances both at the historic Theater and on tours they carry out around the world.
