Dancers have greater self-control
Dance enthusiasts are always excited when science confirms the benefits of dancing. Now, a new study from the University of Kansas gives yet another reason to become a dancer. Specifically, the new study shows that exercise can increase self-control as well as the ability to make healthier food choices, avoid excessive shopping, and make smarter life decisions.
While the research involved people who systematically walked or run, can easily be linked to other types of physical activity. Namely, dancing. According to the new study, the more you exercise, the more self-control you have. This means that dancers, whose daily routine includes rehearsals and practice, probably have greater self-control.
One positive finding is that this effect of exercise seemed to persist for a month after the researchers reduced their physical activity. For dancers, this means they likely still have self-control during their vacation. Sure, you can ease up on your exercise routine over time, but the self-control gained from training will remain.
Although researchers aren't yet sure why exercise increases self-control, it's another reason to keep exercising. Becoming a better dancer means you're a healthier person, with more mental toughness to make better choices in and out of the studio.
