22nd Kalamata International Dance Festival

The Program for the 22nd Kalamata International Dance Festival

With a new artistic director Katerina Kasioumi, which undertook the risky venture of organizing an International Dance Festival in just 2-3 months, after the sudden resignation of Vicky Marangopoulos in January 2016, the Kalamata International Dance Festival will again this year be the dignified continuation of an organization that is recognized in all respects.

Let us not forget that over the past 21 years, the Kalamata Dance Festival has hosted top international names and contemporary dance groups, young Greek artists have emerged, great foreign dance theorists have taught, and most importantly, the Festival, having been recognized by the international dance community, has deservedly been added to the international map of dance.

In this year's 22nd Kalamata International Dance Festival which will be held July 15 to 26,We will see eight international and Greek contemporary dance groups, there will be two seminars, one workshop and ten parallel events.

The 22nd edition focuses on two main themes: a) the rediscovery of the principles of contemporary dance, in the sense of feeding contemporary art with fundamental ideas, philosophies and practices, and b) dance for all, with an emphasis on highlighting the "diversity" of the idioms, ages and identities of artists, as well as the simultaneous presence in dance activities of artists with and without disabilities.

The series of parallel events that have been planned are opening up in the city and aspire to highlight another side of the organization, which supports synergies and collaborations with many different institutions and combines dance with music evenings, film screenings, lectures and discussions.

The 22nd Kalamata International Dance Festival is expanding its collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of Messinia, in Kalamata, where the Exhibition “Mythical Dances of Messinia” continues, which will also be accompanied by a dance performance. It collaborates with the Onassis Foundation Stegi and in particular with the Festival of Young Choreographers, as well as with the Ballet of the Greek National Opera. Finally, CineDoc enriches its parallel events with the screening of an award-winning documentary about dance.
