World Ballet Day LIVE 2015: Live broadcasts from five famous ballet companies

Following the success of the live broadcasts from five leading ballet companies in 2014 as part of the celebration of World Ballet Day, World Ballet Day LIVE will take place again this year on October 1. The Australian Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet, the Royal Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada and the San Francisco Ballet will present the rehearsals and preparation of the dancers as well as behind-the-scenes footage from each Theater.

World Ballet Day will be a celebration of dance, with audiences able to watch exclusive rehearsal footage from the world's leading ballet companies, including American Ballet Theatre, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Boston Ballet, English National Ballet, Hamburg Ballet, Houston Ballet, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, National Ballet of China, Nederlands Dans Theater, Northern Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Royal New Zealand Ballet, and Scottish Ballet.

This year, World Ballet Day will begin with the Australian Ballet live from Melbourne, Australia. Audiences will be able to follow the dancers’ preparation, taking a look at the daily training and rehearsals for the ballet “The Sleeping Beauty” produced by the company’s Artistic Director, David McAllister, as well as four other productions that will be presented as part of the Australian Ballet’s tour of China in October 2015. In addition, viewers will be able to watch the history of the Australian Ballet Dance School and how it operates, taking a look at the preparation of young dancers. Alongside the Australian Ballet, clips from other companies will also be shown, including: Bangarra Dance Theatre, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the National Ballet of China.

The Bolshoi Ballet will then present the daily training of the dancers as well as the performances that comprise the 240th season of the Moscow Theater. The live broadcast will begin with the morning dance lessons and continue with the rehearsals for two world premieres of the previous season – the works “Hamlet” by Radu Poklitaru and “Hero of Our Time” by Yuri Possokhov – as well as other programs announced at the first celebration of World Ballet Day last year. Also during the live broadcast from the Bolshoi Theater, viewers will have the opportunity to watch the dancers’ rehearsals in the studio and a comprehensive picture of the premieres, revivals, special programs, festivals, international tours of the Bolshoi Ballet, as well as a gala dedicated to the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. At the same time, through interviews with Vladimir Urin, Sergei Filin, Yuri Possokhov, Boris Akimov, Brigitte Lefevre, Azarii Plisetski and others, the role of the Bolshoi Theatre in many areas of dance will be highlighted.

The Royal Ballet will then broadcast exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from across the Covent Garden building. In particular, morning dance lessons will be shown as well as backstage rehearsals for the ballet “Romeo and Juliet” produced by Kenneth McMillan in which the leading dancers Federico Bonelli and Lauren Cuthbertson will perform the main roles. Rehearsals for the ballet “Carmen” produced by Carlos Acosta, which will be presented in October, will also be broadcast, along with the preparation of the leading dancers for the works of the 2015-2016 season. Part of the programme will be dedicated to a discussion on the development of ballet in the UK with the Artistic Director of the Royal Ballet, Kevin O'Hare, and the Artistic Directors from the Birmingham Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Northern Ballet and Scottish Ballet.

The live broadcast schedule will continue with the National Ballet of Canada from Toronto. The five-hour broadcast will begin with the company’s dancers rehearsing for Christopher Wheeldon’s ballet “The Winter’s Tale,” based on Shakespeare’s play, which will make its North American premiere in Toronto in November. The National Ballet of Canada will then take viewers behind the scenes with a look at rehearsals for William Forsythe’s “The Second Detail,” Marco Goecke’s “Spectre de la Rose,” and Wayne McGregor’s “Chroma,” focusing on how the ballet companies prepare for their touring performances.

The San Francisco Ballet will then present the company’s lessons and rehearsals for the ballets included in the 2016 Season repertoire as well as for the performances that will be presented as part of the company’s fall tour of China. The live program will feature interviews with the company’s Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer, Helgi Tomasson, and the Royal Ballet’s Principal Artist, Liam Scarlett, who will talk about the work of “Frankenstein,” a Royal Ballet production that the San Francisco Ballet will present as part of the company’s 2017 Season repertoire. Also, renowned choreographer William Forsythe will speak about San Francisco Ballet and the upcoming presentation of his work “Pas/Parts,” which will premiere in North America as part of the company’s 2016 Season repertoire.

Please note that viewers are invited to send a video or photo of themselves dancing on social media accompanied by #WorldBalletDay. Videos and photos posted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram before October 1st will be shown during the live broadcasts.
